Klaipeda University – LSKL Champion: A Historic Victory Proves Champions Are Raised Here

On March 30, in the Švyturys Arena in Klaipėda, during the Grand Final of the Lithuanian Student Basketball League (LSKL), the Klaipeda University (KU) basketball team, coached by Mindaugas Stašys, won the championship title for the first time in the university’s history. In a dramatic and emotional battle, the Klaipėda team defeated Vilnius University 76–85 after overtime. This victory earned KU the right to represent Lithuania at the European Universities Games in Salerno, Italy, which will take place this July.

This achievement is not just a momentary burst of sporting success, but the result of consistent and dedicated work by Klaipeda University in developing athletes. KU systematically nurtures young talent by creating favorable conditions to combine professional sports and academic studies. The Leisure Sports Studies program is one of the clearest examples of this approach.

The program offers three specializations: basketball (in cooperation with the Lithuanian Basketball Federation), football (developed in partnership with a Barcelona club), and sports dance (in collaboration with the Lithuanian Sports Dance Federation). This consistent work, strong partnerships with sports organizations, and an academic environment supportive of young athletes allow KU to build strong teams and achieve top results. Today’s basketball team triumph is clear proof of that.

“I am proud of our students, coaches, and the entire university community. Today, we see the result of work that has been carried out over more than one season. Klaipeda University consistently invests in athlete development and strives to ensure that young people find not only high-quality studies here, but also an environment where they can grow as professional athletes. This victory is strong evidence that academic goals and high-performance sport can go hand in hand,” says KU Rector Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas.

This year’s final marked a new stage in Lithuanian student basketball – it ended a decade-long dominance by Vytautas Magnus University, with the championship title going to Klaipeda University for the first time. From the opening minutes, the game was intensely competitive. In the third quarter, Vilnius University took the lead, but KU did not break down. In the fourth quarter, they erased the deficit and forced overtime. During overtime, the Klaipėda team demonstrated maturity, character, and composure – qualities of true champions.

After the match, KU head coach Mindaugas Stašys shared his emotions: “It was a wonderful season – we suffered only one loss and played very good basketball throughout. In the third quarter of the final, we were seriously shaken – we struggled offensively for a long time and were down by 16 points. But I want to thank the team for their character – only very strong, determined people who truly love this sport can come back from such a situation and win. If someone had told me before the season that we would reach and win the final, I would have hardly believed it. But today it has become reality.”

“This was a true final – a real basketball celebration. I am very proud of my team and our coach. Although the game had its ups and downs, the most important thing is that we achieved victory,” said KU team captain Gabrielius Mažeika.

After the final, coach M. Stašys thanked KU Sports Center coordinator Banga Balnaitė-Stonienė for her significant contribution to the team’s development and daily support, Rimantas Cibauskas for his continued support of basketball, the opportunity to play home games at Švyturys Arena, and for creating a celebration for the fans. The coach dedicated the victory to KU Rector Artūras Razbadauskas, emphasizing his belief in the team.

The final celebration was further enriched by performances from Klaipeda University ensembles. The audience was delighted by the sports dance group “Danė” and the rhythmic gymnastics dance group “Leader Dance.” Special attention was given to the “Danė” performance during halftime, which was met with enthusiastic applause and warm wishes as they prepare to represent the university and Lithuania at the European Championship.

At Klaipeda University, sport is seen as an important part of comprehensive education. The university consistently prepares sports professionals, strengthens partnerships with sports organizations, and provides student-athletes with real opportunities to achieve high results both academically and in sports. The LSKL gold medals are not only a historic victory but also a clear message that Klaipeda University is capable of raising champions.
